FYA's Young People Ambassador Programme

FYA was formed in 2016 by 12 young people from African, Black, Caribbean, and Mixed-Race backgrounds who were out of education and not at work to help themselves and those like them to address issues affecting them.

We have engaged over 1000 young people helping them with skills, linking with others, service providers and statutory bodies, enhancing their sense of belonging and citizenry and gaining confidence and skills to keep away from crime and anti-social behaviour and empowering them to achieve their ambitions.

We continue to be a BAME young people-led, focused and driven organisation with 85% of the staff, management, and activities by BAME young people under 30-year-olds and with services offered to over 90% of BAME youths aged between 16–30 years. Almost everyone in the team has lived experience and a cultural and social linkage with the service users.

We support 16-30 years old from anywhere, but mainly our service users are from African, Caribbean, Middle East, Pakistani, Indian, and Mixed-Race backgrounds living in Nottingham.

We were established to provide a safe space for BAME young people specifically to enable them to explore, access and prepare for life’s opportunities and understand how to address issues affecting them at the earliest possible point.

What Does An Ambassador Do?

You will be part of sustaining and expanding our current programme. You will feedback on our development programmes and improve them to help more young people. We will help you to develop your qualities and skills to blend with our work to help the growth of young people’s empowerment

You will be passionate about our purpose and mission. You will have the opportunity to access our training programmes, employability development, mentoring and career support services

Why Become An Ambassador?

We will work with you to improve our counselling and 1-1 support of the young people online for better outcomes in engagement, training, employment, and other support services. It will also help the underserved youths to go beyond their comfort zones (language, culture, connections, neighbourhoods, and knowledge) to access services and seek support. So, it will give you many opportunities to meet, discuss and work with us while accessing relevant and authentic information for you and our service users.

What Will I Gain?

Our services are for improved safety, engagement, and interaction with young people and to meet the demands of the trialling probation support services successfully. It will increase your sense of belonging and relevance to what is happening, understanding where to get support, and linking and working with FYA will be a new experience with a lasting effect.

Our One-to-One support sessions, courses and in-person workshops will improve our service provision and your skills through better communication. It will enable more people to fulfil their potential by working to address issues at the earliest possible stage through; the creation of safe space for discussions and conversations, opportunities for authentic community voices, and in-depth review of issues by communities who understand them best hence helping identify and act on matters that delay being determined by the authorities; chances for groups to identify and compete for opportunities that they rarely get to know about; a chance to identify and act on social issues such as hate crime, mental health, crime, anti-social behaviours.

How To Apply

You can apply to volunteer with us anytime if you are aged 16-30 and live in the UK. Our Youth Ambassadors are a dynamic team of volunteers helping to tackle some of the youth employment barriers young people experience.

More Information About Us

We are looking to supporting more young people and those supporting them to enable us to learn better and understand the needs and support processes for the young people in Nottingham and abroad.

We want to support our communities and you are our focus! We are driving our current projects online and providing physically safe spaces, extensive recruitment, training, placements, and engagement of young people from BAME backgrounds in Nottingham. Having been started by individuals who were victims of knife crime and had faced undaunting legal and social challenges, we identified knife crime, unsocial behaviour, skills development, and effective networking as some of the core areas to work on. We have grown exponentially through adequate service provision, networking, collaboration, and the triumphant return of those who go through our support and development programmes, who are our most significant assets.
